In celebration of the first annual Cleveland Cocktail Week (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1448563022081711 Twitter:@CWCLE), the Katz Club Bar Car will be hosting a very special tasting on Friday September 5th.
Eric Seed, principal and owner of Haus Alpenz (http://alpenz.comTwitter:@HausAlpenz), will be on hand. Eric is also a native Clevelander, growing up on the east side. He is also a James Beard Award nominee for “Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional. If you are unfamiliar with the name Alpenz, they are an international distributor of spirits focused upon distinctive, authentic and unique flavors. The Minneapolis based company was founded in 2005 and has imported such great products as Dolin vermouth and Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette as well as reviving many forgotten libations and bringing us rare artisanal and regional offerings. Their bottles can be spotted at some of the best cocktail bars in the nation, including our own acclaimed Katz Club.
Named “Aromatized & Oxidized,” the seminar will cover fortified wines from the Haus Alpenz portfolio including some items that are soon to be released for the first time in Ohio. Complimentary appetizers from the Katz Club will be served.
Immediately following the seminar, our own Eric and Lorilei will be hosting a special happy hour featuring many extraordinary Haus Alpenz products.
Please join us on September 5th at 5 pm. Tickets are free. RSVP through eventbrite at the following link: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/aromatized-oxidized-at-the-katz-club-with-eric-seed-of-haus-alpenz-tickets-12707884625?ref=ebtn
We will see you there!
Composting for the Cleveland Community
August 14, 2014, 12:00 AM | Posted by Theresa Szentendri in Farm to Table
We believe in giving back to the community as much as we receive. In July, The Katz Club Diner committed to a new initiative of composting and recycling in an effort to not only reduce our waste, but to responsibly and sustainably control it. As an organization that is committed to supporting local farms, farmers, and artisans we want to ensure that our business is doing what it can to pay it forward to those who work so hard to provide us with our produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, and even honey. One way of doing this is to ensure that we are taking care of our environment by composting and recycling items that may otherwise end up in a landfill.
Groundz Recycling (http://groundzrecycling.wordpress.com/) in Cleveland is a not-for-profit organization that takes our compostable materials and utilizes them to promote such initiatives as urban farming, edible education, and funding other non-profits commited to zero-waste initiatives. We are so excited and proud to be among the local businesses using their fantastic service and we strive to always work to be environmentally conscious and socially responsible. In fact, we recently had to upgrade our Cleveland Heights maintained recycling bin to one almost twice the size as our staff really began to take ownership of this important initiative.
We love Cleveland and Cleveland Heights and will continually work towards positively impacting our community and planet!
Building our strong coffee community!
August 07, 2014, 12:00 AM | Posted by Theresa Szentendri in counter culture
This week our skilled baristas participated in an exciting project: They dressed in their best 1950’s inspired outfits, had their hair and makeup done, and posed for professionally shot photographs to be compiled into a 2015 calendar.
Earlier this year our coffee crew was contacted by long established local coffee company, Phoenix Coffee (http://phoenixcoffee.com/). CEO and super-barista Sarah Wilson and her imaginative marketing team wanted to do a collaborative, artistic piece to not only build community between shops and baristas in Cleveland but to raise funds for the amazing Café Femenino foundation (http://www.coffeecan.org/)- an organization focused on empowering women coffee growers and producers. Their vision was to create a fun and beautiful “baristas of Cleveland” calendar, with each month’s picture representing a different café. Through Clebrews ( http://www.clebrews.org/about) the idea was able to come to fruition.
With as much enthusiasm as any barista is capable of, our coffee professionals emphatically joined in the fun alongside baristas from Phoenix, Pour (https://www.facebook.com/PourCleveland), Rising Star(http://www.risingstarcoffee.com/), Erie Island (http://erieislandcoffee.com/) and others. Each shop brought their own ideas and personalities to their picture, some with elaborate costumes and props and all with an awesome sense of humor. The photographs were taken at nationally recognized artist Angelo Merendino’s west side studio ( http://angelomerendino.com/) with the assistance of professional makeup and hair stylists and production managers. It was exhilarating to be involved in such an experience; not only to be on camera but to enjoy the company and community of our local café network.
After two days of in studio work followed by several weeks of editing and finalizing, the calendars will be available for sale. Look for them in the participating Cafes come October, just in time for the holidays! And what better gift than something so functional, artistic, hilarious, meta local and of course, for an incredible cause? We sure can’t wait for you to see the final product, you won’t be able to resist!

Vegans, Celiacs and Health-Conscious: Rejoice!

vegan quinoa pasta with smoked tomato sauce, meyer lemon, capers, spinach & mushroom croquettes
It’s a cool experience to watch a ‘carnivore’ type try a great dish that happens to be vegan, and light up upon tasting it. We’ve gotten to see this reaction often with our new menu, which features some truly fantastic veg-friendly items. At both the diner and fire, our chefs work to create vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes that are not a consolation prize for diners in those categories, but a celebration of foods that also happen to adhere to their dietary guidelines.
From ancient grains hot cereal with steamed local almond milk, to quinoa pasta with smoked tomato, spinach and mushroom croquettes, the options for vegans, celiacs and health-conscious individuals are inventive and satisfying. Our housemade vegan burger has quickly joined the eggplant reuben as a lunchtime favorite, and the vegan curried lentil soup is one of our best selling menu items.
Here are a couple suggested substitutes for vegetarians and vegans:
- local farmer’s table: substitute sautéed spinach for the bacon
- shortrib chilaquiles: request the vegetarian version, which is prepared with sautéed spinach and mushrooms in place of the shortrib – delicious!
- romaine hearts salad: omit the bleu cheese to make this vegan and gluten-free
These are just a couple simple changes that broaden the options; don’t hesitate to let your server know if you have dietary restrictions so that they may help go over what’s in a particular dish, or ask the chef about a substitute. We carry gluten-free bread that can be requested for sandwiches or breakfast, and we are happy to accommodate special requests whenever possible!
